The concept and practice of feminism continues to raise multiple contestations on the African continent, despite the varied contributions that feminists and gender advocates have made on the social, economic and political spheres. Feminism and gender continue to be perceived with suspicion, and as foreign importations that destabilise rather than edify the African governance, peace and security discourse. Through a desk review of existing literature, this chapter provided a qualitative exploration of the contested relationship between feminism and the existing patriarchal modes of governance in Africa, what this means for the future of feminism and the WPS agenda, as well as for the future of the governance, peace and security agenda in Africa. Abstract: This dissertation has made an attempt to interrogate the centripetal and centrifugal forces imbedded in African unity, which spans six decades and more. This study used the ideology of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance alongside the theories of regional integration to examine how the debates on the quest for African unity have evolved over a period of sixty years. The author divided the evolution of the quest for African unity into three phases: the first phase involves the early 1900s, which was marked by the formation of the Pan-African Congresses, however, this was to set a background history of Africa’s quest for unity. It further maintained that the transplantation of Pan-Africanism from the African diaspora to Africa represented the first phase, which came to an end when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was established in 1963 ushering in the second phase in the quest for African unity. Inquiry into regional integration has recently created the attention particularly of social scientists and policy makers into this new field of knowledge with emphasis on European integration as the best existing model of integration. This has consequently led to the development of theories and concepts that explain the philosophical ideologies of regional integration from the perspectives of European integration. While these theories have been borrowed heavily to explain integration across the globe, there are certain specific Africans theories that best explains African integration since independence to date. This paper hopes at using these African perspectives to explain African integration. The inspiration from this paper is to help understand what regional integration in Africa is and what fundamental ideologies explain regional integration in Africa. It must be emphasized that this paper seeks to analyze two important African ideologies (Pan Africanism and African Renaissance) that promote and explain regional integration in Africa. While Pan Africanism sought to promote African unity through political liberation of African states from colonialism and slave trade, African Renaissance goes beyond political liberation to chart the path of Africa's economic, socio-cultural and political development advanced by globalization and technology for Africa unity.

The first two editions of the Festivals of Blacks arts and culture which owed much to the ideologies of the Pan-Africanism and Negritude that preceded them, no doubt laid legacies that have continued to serve as strong reference points in the discussion of Africans and African descent relationship. Apart from providing an unusual forum that brought to light the diverse contributions of Blacks and African peoples to the universal currents of thought and arts, both editions drew attentions to the expected relationship between the continental Africans and their offspring in the Diaspora. This thesis makes a case for education reform in Af rica. It argues for an education system that is African centered and poised to develop Afri cans who can serve as the agents and leaders of Africa’s transformation. Through a case study of the leadership institution African Leadership Academy (ALA) whose goal is to develop the next generation of Afr ican leaders that will transform Africa, this thesis illustrates the potential of an African centered education system in bringing about development in the continent. Also, the dreams, aspirations, and views of an important but often neglected group in deliberat ions about how to develop Africa – the average African (especially African youth) are pres ented. In so doing, the thesis provides a framework upon which an African centered educatio n system in Africa can be developed from.
