For this tutorial, you'll need PSP7, an adventurous vectoring
spirit, and you can d/l my cresent shape and selections right here.
Save the shape to your PSP/shape folder and the selections to your PSP selection
folder.
(NOTE: If you'd rather use selections, just load these
from disk and flood fill these when calling for vector drawing in my
tutorial.)
-
Begin with a new transparent image, 300 X
500. Set your background colour on a dark grey (#738289) and
foreground black.
-
Using your shapes tool, line width of 2,
antialias and create as vector both checked, draw a elipse in the
middle of your canvas.
-
Move the top edge down so it's a little
squished. That will be his tummy. Right click on your layer
palette on this layer and convert to raster. Select all/float.
This will assure that our spray paint and splots stay within our
outlines.
-
Change your foreground colour to a dark blue (#4A567E) and
use your preset shape tool, inkblot, line width of 1 and draw on some splots.
-
Now if you'd like, paint on some black spraypaint around the
edges for texture and depth. Use these settings:
-
Select none. Ok let's make his legs and tail
now. This is probably the toughest part of Big Curtis. There are
2 ways you can do it....(1) Use your preset shapes, elipse, antialias and vector
checked, the same dark grey as the tummy and black as foreground
colour. Line width back to 2. Draw an elipse in the bottom part
of your canvas. **OR (2) my alternate method (and easier, I
think), would be using the draw tool, freehand, line width 2, create as
vector, antialias and close path checked.
And draw the outline of legs and tail. This will
create a vector drawing which you can edit in the same
way. Don't worry if you
make a mistake, you can re-edit them until they take on the shape we
need.
-
Let's do those nodes! Click on your object selector
tool. In your tool options box, click on node edit. Add several
nodes using ctrl/shift to shape the legs and tail. Just do a rough
outline.
-
Right click on the nodes you need to adjust and choose
"Symetric" and then "Cusp". Move the arrows until
it shapes with nice rounded curves. The toes are the most
difficult. Just keep trying, don't give up! When it is looking
good, move it under the tummy layer. Right click on your vector
layer in the layer palette, and convert to raster. Selections/select
all/float to get it selected.
-
Paint on some black spraypaint around the
edges for texture and depth. Use the same settings as in step 5.
-
Again, paint on some splots....Change your background colour to a dark blue (#4A567E) and
use your preset shape tool, inkblot, line width of 1 and draw on some splots.
Select none. How's he lookin'? Take a deep breath, the
hardest part is done! Ya! Move the legs to the bottom of the
stack in the layer palette. Be sure the tummy is on top of the legs
layer.
-
Ok, now on to his head! Set your background colour to
the dark grey and foreground to black again. Using your preset shapes,
draw an elipse, line width back to 2, antialias and as a vector checked.
Flatten the elipse to create the shape of his head. Node edit again to make
the ears. Add nodes as I have done using ctrl/click. Right click
on each node and choose "Symetrical", then "Cusp".
Using your deformation tool, rotate the head slightly to the right.
Convert to raster/select all/float and do the spray paint and splot thing
again :)
-
Let's draw on the details now :) Change your
background colour to a dusty pink (#D7B9BB). Use your preset shape,
heart and draw a small heart shape in the middle of the head. Rotate
it slightly with the deformation tool. Now draw a small freehand line,
width of 1 under the nose and on the ears and eyebrows as I have:
-
Use your preset shape, elipse to draw 2 small eyes in black
also.
-
Don't forget to add a few dimples on each side :)
-
For the whiskers, I used black foreground colour, background
turned off, freehand line, width of
2. Click on the 2nd tab in the tool options and choose the bevel,
curve tracking 3. Draw 3 crooked whiskers on each side of his face.
-
OK, now onto the moon! Leave your foreground colour as
black, and pick a nice vibrant yellow as background colour for the moon. Using my cresent
shape, draw a moon as a vector.
Edit the nodes as we've done for his body, rotate it
slightly to the left and then move this layer below the head layer.
Selections/select all/float and add some spraypaint as we did for
Curtis. Add a curly Q to each end of the moon, freehand, width of 2.
-
We're almost done! OK, let's pause now......do the
paws!(g) Using your draw tool, freehand, width 2, background colour
grey, as a vector, draw the paw shape and edit the nodes to make them
resemble this:
-
Copy and paste as a new vector selection, image/mirror,
select all/float and spray paint and add splot shapes to both paws.
-
OK, now for the final step. We need to add a bit of
arm behind him. Click on the legs layer, add a new layer. Using
your freehand line tool, draw a freehand rectangular shape. Move it into
place with the mover tool. Select all/float and spray paint some
black. Now merge all visible, and copy/paste as a new image. Use
this new image to save as a .psp or a tube.
-
Back on the original image, Add a new layer, move it to the
bottom and fill with whatever background colour you'd like. I used
blue and then Fantastic Machine paint engine, faded mosaic preset.
That's it! You've done it! Now Cassie has a BIG
bro! Way to GO! I sure hope you had fun :)
